John Barber
JOHN W. BARBER is a Winnipeg lawyer and mediator trained in alternate dispute resolution.He is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg and the University of Saskatchewan and has completed post graduate study through the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Mr. Barber has practised law in Manitoba since 1985. He established his own law office in 1987, and founded the Assiniboia Law Group in 2004. Mr. Barber has over 25 years of experience practicing law, developing specialized expertise in structuring estate planning solutions and probate related legal matters in addition to specializing in family and real estate law.

Mr. Barber is actively involved in advanced estate planning for families wishing to structure succession of family property to subsequent generations. He is a member of Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and holds the TEP designation.* He has served on the Board of Directors of STEP Winnipeg for a number of years where he was engaged as Chair of Educational Programming for the Winnipeg chapter of STEP. He has also completed the STEP Advanced Certificate in Trust Disputes.

In the past, Mr. Barber has acted as a mediator with Mediation Services, a volunteer organization engaged in facilitating resolution of individual and community disputes. Mr. Barber has also acted as a mediator in personal injury claims at the request of the Canadian Dispute Resolution Corporation, as well as at the request of other interested parties. He is a past member of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Manitoba, serving on the Board of Directors and assisting as a coach in mediation training workshops sponsored by the Institute. He is prepared to act as mediator in family estate and trust disputes.

Mr. Barber has served as Chairperson of St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church Foundation, and is still a member of the Board of the Foundation and St. Andrew’s United Church.

* The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) is a unique professional body providing its members with a local, national and international learning and business network focusing on the responsible stewardship of assets today and across the generations. STEP provides education, training, representation and networking for its’ members. Members advise clients on the broad business of the management of personal finance. Full Members of STEP (TEPs) are the most experienced and senior practitioners in the field of trusts and estates.


Brent Buss
Brent received his Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) degree in Labour and Workplace Studies from the University of Manitoba in 1999, and his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba in 2004. During university, he was on the Dean’s Honour List, was appointed a Desautels Credit Management Fellow, and was co-editor of the Asper Review of International Business and Trade Law. He was also awarded a Canadian Credit Management Scholarship, and won the R.R. Goodwin Q.C. Memorial Award.

Brent has practiced law since 2005, and joined the Assiniboia Law Group in 2014. He is a former Crown Prosecutor, with extensive experience prosecuting clients in Impaired Driving and Domestic Assault matters, among many others. As a private lawyer, he has extensive experience in the areas of Criminal Defence, Family Law, Civil Litigation, Wills and Estates, and Real Estate.

Brent has served as a Board Member of the Manitoba Bar Association, and was a founding member and Past President of the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Manitoba.
